Gregg Wilensky at Lois Lambert Gallery

March 14, 2015

Lois Lambert Gallery presents "Hovering, Photographs at the Boundaries of Nature" a collection of digital phtography by Gregg Wilensky. Gregg has traveled world wide to photograph images that capture what he calls "moments of contemplative stillness in nature." Once he feels he has the image, he heads for the "digital darkroom." Wilensky's work explores the line between abstraction and realism.

Wilensky uses his knowledge of low level visual processing, akin to what a primitive creature from the Edicaran period six hundred million years ago might have seen, and asks; "What would we perceive today if we could more vividly visualize our low level neural processes?" Wilensky's work evokes an emotional response or connection by simplifying the landscapes into abstract color forms and lines. The body of photographs uses the digital darkroom to help visualize those transitions in the perception of nature between direct representation and the hidden beauty which lies in the abstraction of its forms and colors. With this series, Gregg investigates the minimum needed for a photograph that is still true to the medium and the spirit of the image captured, and yet stimulate an emotional response. His art is in the abstraction, controlled and manipulated, but still emotional in content.
